Purpose:
The objective of this study was to analyze prevalence of trachoma and risk factors associated with the disease in rural areas of the Sistan-va-Baluchestan province in Iran from 2012–2013.
Methods:
In this population-based cross-sectional study, 80 clusters were selected using a systematic, random, and probability proportional to size method. The study used the World Health Organization (WHO) trachoma grading system that includes the following grades: follicular trachomatous inflammation (TF), intense trachomatous inflammation (TI), cicatricial or scarring trachoma (TS), trachomatous trichiasis (TT), and corneal opacity (CO).
Results:
The study surveyed 8,187 individuals and analyzed 7,912 eligible subjects (96.6%) including 3,737 children aged 1–9 years and 4,175 females 15 years. Following clinical examination, 72 individuals including 26 children and 46 adults were diagnosed with trachoma. Cicatricial trachoma cases in children were not observed and the prevalence of noncicatricial trachoma among that age group was 0.7% (95% CI: 0.45–1.1). In female adults, the prevalence of cicatricial trachoma and overall trachoma were 0.6% (95% CI: 0.38–0.88) and 1.10 (95% CI: 0.80–1.46), respectively.
Conclusion:
According to clinical exams of all age groups and clusters, TT and TF prevalence were <1% and <5%, respectively. Therefore, the Sistan-va-Baluchestan province is not considered an endemic region for trachoma.
